The Mission Team Departs Saturday

On Sat., Mar. 29 a group of eighteen Zumbro members will depart for an intergenerational spring break mission trip to the greater Chicago area. Interested in what we're going to be doing? Check out the list below and be sure to check back often to read about our adventures.

St. Paul’s Lutheran Church (where we will be staying) hosts a “Sunday Soup Kitchen” every Sunday afternoon.  Our group will prepare and serve the meal on Sunday.

Each person is asked to bring items for Snack Packs.  We will combine our snacks together and pack them in individual brown paper sacks to be passed out while we tour around Chicago.

We will spend Monday afternoon volunteering at Connections for the Homeless in Evanston.  Connections is a homeless shelter housed in the basement of a church.  Individuals are able to stay at Connections for a longer time than most shelters and are partnered with social workers that seek to find long-term solutions for individuals experiencing homelessness.  We’ll learn a lot more about them when we tour their facility.  We’ve been collecting clothing for this shelter at Zumbro and will spend part of our afternoon sorting that clothing and helping in their “store” available for clients.

On Monday evening we will travel to Schaumburg, IL where we will volunteer at Feed My Starving Children (FMSC).  FMSC is an organization that packs meals to be sent to countries around the world.  We’ll become professionals at packing “chicken, veggies, soy, rice” and will have a ton of fun while doing it.  Dancing and singing is optional and encouraged.

We will spend Tuesday afternoon at United Church of Roger’s Park (UCRP) in Chicago.  We’ll learn about the many ways this church lives out its mission in its Chicago neighborhood, and then we’ll volunteer at UCRP’s after school program.
